Street art in Turkey

07/05/2014

As a friend of words and colours, the writings and multiple forms of graffiti and street art I have encountered in Izmir and other Turkish cities have caught my interest. These are some of my favourite captions:

I’ve noticed that the amount of graffiti in Izmir has increased considerably ever since the Gezi park protests last summer. The same is most probably the case in Istanbul and other places across Turkey. Some consider graffiti as insulting, damaging or dirty, others perceive it as a way of self-expression and a dialogue with ones surroundings.

Some undesired messages may be “disposed of”. Here’s an example from my neighbourhood:

The text says: “Make love tonight.”

What do you think about this topic? Are there any other places world-wide you recommend for street art hunting?
