Weekly Photo Challenge: Change
This week’s photo challenge is about change. There have been quite a few changes in my life since moving to Turkey: A new city, a new culture, a new language, a new life.
This picture does not only show a traffic light changing to green. It also represents the street where I used to live in Berlin (recognize the famous Ampelmännchen?). Looking at it now makes me a bit nostalgic. I love Berlin!
At the same time, looking at my surroundings here makes me very happy. For me, every day in İzmir is exciting in itself. I do not necessarily need to experience anything groundbreaking 24 hours a day. After all, I have gotten used to most changes after six months of having lived here now; seven to be precise. It is mostly the little things that bring me joy: Buying bread and chatting with the cheese sellers, meeting new class mates and learning more and more words in Turkish, bargaining at the bazaar, having tea with friends…
Turkey has become my new home now. And for the moment I am perfectly fine with that.
Many people are scared of change. It is true that there might be a discomforting feeling when you do not know what to expect of certain situations in life or when you are not sure about what is coming next. But change can also be exciting. Wouldn’t it be boring if things always stayed the same? We need change to progress, to open our eyes to the beauty around us, to feel alive.
